A Father’s Love

When my daughter Lilly was three-years-old she started doing something all on her own. At night as we were putting her to bed, we said our prayers, and of course right after I said, “amen” she started saying “I’m thirsty” as if she had walked through the desert without water that day. After I got her the water and headed out the door she said, “Daddy, will you cuddle me?” How do you refuse that?! So I laid down in her bed, and she was still, she was quiet, and as her father, these small, quiet moments are some of my favorites that I get to spend with her. She doesn’t talk much, she can just be still knowing that her father is near, that I love her and that I will protect her. Her brother Atticus has also started doing this and I only hope that my youngest son Dean will pick it up as he gets older.

There is a verse in the book of Psalms that reminds me of these small, still moments with my kids and it is exactly how we should spend time with God. It says this,

“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10

This world is loud with the news constantly speaking about COVID, the division in our country, the struggles of staying at home, and then there are the other issues that you are dealing with! It is hard to be still. There is constantly more to do, more to read, things to worry about, issues to be solved, calls to make, and texts to answer. But, what if we put away the distractions and took God at His Word, and what if, like my kids, we took the time to be still in the presence of our Father in Heaven? Not just once, but daily, praying to Him, giving our fears, worries, and anxieties to Him. Knowing that God has the world under His control and that He is God and we are not. Being comforted by His Spirit and encouraged by His Word. My prayer is that we would become a people who are still before God, basking in His presence and filled with His Spirit.

I hope you’ll make the worship experience a part of your Sunday this weekend. We’ll have options for being a part of community online and onsite (check out the details HERE). And remember God’s Word, “Be still, and know that I am God.” That will minister to your soul.
