Reflective Memorization: Philippians 2:3
“Don’t be selfish; don’t live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself.”
Context: Paul wrote this letter to the church of Philippi from a prison in Rome around 61 AD. As we begin this week’s devotional, there are three things to keep in mind:
– Reflect on what God is trying to say to you.
– Relax in the light of His character.
– Respond to what God is calling you to do.
Scripture: Philippians 2:1-11
Let’s admit it – we live in a prideful society. We’re tempted with power and control. To ‘climb the ladder’ regardless of who we step on. Yet in the midst of that, we edge God out of our lives. What if there’s a better way to live? C.S. Lewis said, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less.”
Paul told the church in Philippi their attitudes should be the same that Christ Jesus had which was one of humility. It’s ultimately laying our egos on the altar so we can be free to walk in humility. We can find joy in humility.
What does that look like in our everyday lives? It’s doing the dishes without complaining, checking on our neighbors, forgiving someone or telling someone today what they really mean to you. Each day let’s decide to walk through life with the same mindset of Jesus!
QUESTION: In what ways does pride play out in me?
QUESTION: How does pride disguise itself in me?
QUESTION: How can I show humility to those around me today?
