03 Apr Pay It Forward
A few weeks ago, I was in a hurry for lunch and decided to pick up fast food at the drive-thru. When I pulled up to the window to pay, the cashier told me that the person in front of me had paid for my meal. I tried to see who it was but they were already gone. It made me smile that somebody had bought my meal, so I told the cashier that I wanted to pay for the meal of the person behind me. As I was trying to exit the parking lot, the person that was behind me pulled up and motioned for me to roll down my window. She thanked me and told me how much she appreciated what I had done. Then she told me that she was going to pay it forward.
It’s interesting that often times, people respond to kindness with kindness. No matter what you are going through in life, when somebody is kind to you, it brings out the best in you and compels you to show kindness to somebody else. On top of that, in the process of you being kind to somebody else it also brings you joy!
As I drove away, I began to think about the next person that would experience a random act of kindness. It made me excited to think that they would probably respond the same way! The person that bought my meal had set in motion a series of events that was probably going to bring joy to a lot of other people! Imagine if Christians everywhere decided to set aside their differences, stop judging other people, and instead, just go do something kind for somebody. I think we would change the world!
I wonder if that is what Jesus meant when He told us in John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples.”
Jesus said that the mark of His disciples is that they love one another. Not only that, He told us to love one another the way that He has loved us. Jesus showed His love to us by serving us, and He calls us to do the same for others.
One of the things I love about newhope church is that the people put their faith into action. On the second Saturday of every month, people from all the campuses head out to serve their communities. I would like to invite you to join newhopers across the movement for Second Saturday Serve, on Saturday April 13th. We will head out together to serve others and change the world, one act of kindness at a time.
I also hope you will join us this Sunday as we continue Wrecked & Redeemed! Pastor Benji and 44 other newhopers have arrived back home safely from the Holy Land and will be joining us!
